EC announces Assembly poll schedule for J&K, Haryana

#J&K to Elect New Assembly in Three Phases; Results on 4 Oct.

New Delhi: Jammu and Kashmir will hold its first Assembly elections since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019, with voting scheduled in three phases. The announcement was made by the Election Commission of India on Friday, alongside the schedule for Haryana’s Assembly elections.

In Jammu and Kashmir, voting will occur in three phases: September 18, September 25, and October 1. The election for Haryana will take place in a single phase on October 1. The results for both states are set to be announced on October 4.

This marks a significant political development for Jammu and Kashmir, which has been under Governor’s rule since 2018. Following the delimitation process, the region’s Assembly now consists of 90 seats.

The upcoming elections represent the first opportunity for the people of Jammu and Kashmir to elect a new Assembly since the central government’s move to revoke Article 370, which previously granted the region special autonomy.
