New Delhi: Justice Sanjiv Khanna has been appointed as the next Chief Justice of India, effective November 11. Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal announced the appointment via Twitter, noting that President Droupadi Murmu made the decision after consulting with current Chief Justice DY Chandrachud. Justice Khanna, who is currently the second senior-most judge of the Supreme Court, will be the 51st Chief Justice of India and is set to retire on May 13, 2025.
Justice Khanna was elevated to the Supreme Court on January 18, 2019, and has since authored several landmark rulings while serving on multiple Constitution Benches. His judgments emphasize personal liberty, democratic participation, and individual autonomy. Renowned for his meticulous preparation, Justice Khanna is recognized for his pragmatic approach to dispute resolution and efficient use of judicial time.
Incumbent Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, who has served since November 9, 2022, is set to retire on November 10.
