IIT-ISM Celebrates 99th Foundation Day with Milestones in Education, Research, and Sustainability

Dhanbad: Jharkhand Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar, while addressing the 99th Foundation Day of the Indian Institute of Technology- Indian School of Mines (IIT-ISM)) on Monday, called on students and alumni to embrace the spirit of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,” which means “the world is one family.” He urged them to apply their education with a sense of responsibility towards building a developed and prosperous India.

As the chief guest at the event, Governor Gangwar highlighted that India’s progress could only be realized when every citizen conscientiously fulfills their duties and responsibilities.

IIT-ISM, celebrating nearly a century of excellence, marked its 99th Foundation Day with a series of significant events. The day included recognizing distinguished researchers and long-serving employees for their vital contributions to the institute’s legacy.

P.M. Prasad, an IIT-ISM alumnus and Chairman of Coal India Limited, expressed his confidence in the institute’s bright future. Professor Prem Vrat, another key speaker, emphasized IIT-ISM’s growth in emerging fields such as renewable energy and water management.

A significant moment during the event was the planting of 100 fruit-bearing trees on the campus, reinforcing IIT (ISM)’s commitment to sustainability.

Over 200 school students were also invited to explore the institute’s advanced laboratories and geological museum, igniting their curiosity and inspiring future scientists and engineers.

The cultural program featured captivating performances by renowned musicians, including Pandit Partha Bose and Pandit Santosh Nehar, who played the Sitar, Violin, Tabla, and Ghatam, along with a classical dance performance of “Srita Kamla Kucha.”

Founded in 1926, IIT (ISM) has evolved from a mining-focused institution to a national leader in research, particularly in critical minerals, clean coal technology, and sustainability. With 17 centers of excellence, IIT-ISM continues to play a pivotal role in technological and societal advancements.

As the institute approaches its centenary, it remains steadfast in its mission to foster knowledge and promote global unity through research and education.
