Dhanbad: The 44th Convocation of IIT (ISM) Dhanbad began today at the Penman Auditorium, with a special ceremony to honor the 183 graduates of the 2023-24 batch. The event was graced by Padma Bhushan Dr. V.K. Saraswat, Member of NITI Aayog, who delivered the convocation address as the chief guest. Dr. Saraswat also presented medals to the graduating students, marking a significant milestone in their academic journey.
The inaugural ceremony, which began at 6:30 p.m., was further distinguished by the conferral of an honorary Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) degree upon Dr. Saraswat. The award recognized his outstanding contributions to science and technology.
In his address, Dr. Saraswat commended IIT (ISM) Dhanbad for its evolution from a pioneering institution in mining education to one that now offers a wide array of disciplines. He expressed pride in the institute’s global recognition, citing its inclusion in the BRICS 2024 Summit, which showcased its contributions to science and technology. “It gives me great pleasure to learn that IIT (ISM) Dhanbad has been showcased at the BRICS Summit, a testament to its global impact,” Dr. Saraswat remarked.
Dr. Saraswat also highlighted the fast-changing global landscape and stressed the importance of staying ahead in a data-driven, knowledge-centric world. “The 21st Century is a knowledge century, and this is surely the century for our nation,” he said. “India has always played a central role in advancing knowledge, and now, as graduates, you are part of a community capable of making a positive impact worldwide.”
Prof. Prem Vrat, Chairman of the Board of Governors at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, addressed the gathering, which included graduates, their families, and faculty members. He urged the students to view education as a lifelong pursuit. “True knowledge is not just confined to books or classrooms; it is about understanding life, human values, and the world around you,” said Prof. Vrat. He encouraged the graduates to continue learning throughout their lives, emphasizing the importance of empathy, values, and resilience. “Obstacles, failures, and moments of doubt are not signs of defeat but stepping stones to success,” he added.
Prof. Sukumar Mishra, Director of IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, provided an overview of the institute’s recent achievements, including advancements in research and development, international collaborations, and ongoing infrastructure projects. He also highlighted IIT (ISM) Dhanbad’s rise in global rankings, particularly its impressive 7th position among IITs in the QS Sustainability Rankings 2024.
The convocation ceremony, which continues through December 17, marks a significant chapter in the academic journeys of the graduates. It also reflects the continued growth and prominence of IIT (ISM) Dhanbad as a leading institution in higher education and research.
