IIT-ISM Dhanbad Hosts Executive Program on Preventive Maintenance and Electrical Safety in Mines

Dhanbad: A five-day Executive Development Programme (EDP) on “Preventive Maintenance and Electrical Safety in Mines” commenced today at IIT-ISM Dhanbad’s Executive Development Centre. The program, running from January 20 to January 24, 2025, was inaugurated by Professor Dheeraj Kumar, Deputy Director of IIT-ISM, who highlighted the critical role of electrical safety in mining operations.

Professor Kumar emphasized the importance of integrating advanced technologies such as AI, IoT, and blockchain into mining, stating that electrical safety is essential for the success of Mining 4.0. He also spoke about the success of the institute’s Mining Technology Innovation Hub, TEXMiN, which has fostered significant industry partnerships.

The inaugural day included expert lectures and sessions on electrical safety audits, electrical shock hazards, and case studies on mining accidents. Ajay Singh, Deputy Director General (Electrical) at the Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS), emphasized the importance of such programs in preventing accidents and enhancing safety.

Professor Raju Basak, Chairman of the West Bengal State Centre, Institution of Engineers (India), discussed the role of AI and IoT in modern mining, stressing the growing need for preventive maintenance. The program, which has gathered around 60 participants, aims to improve electrical safety and maintenance practices in both underground and open-cast mining operations.

The program was welcomed by Dr. Pradip Kumar Sadhu, Co-Principal Investigator, and concluded with a vote of thanks from Professor Nitai Pal, Principal Investigator of the program.
