Mark Carney Set to Become Canada’s Next Prime Minister After Winning Leadership Race

Ottawa: Mark Carney, former Governor of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, has won the Liberal Party leadership race and is set to become Canada’s next Prime Minister. Carney secured 85.9% of the vote, defeating Chrystia Freeland, Karina Gould, and Frank Baylis.

Carney’s election comes after Justin Trudeau announced his resignation in January amid growing internal pressure and a vote of no-confidence in Parliament. Trudeau’s departure follows a series of challenges, including the resignation of his Finance Minister over policy differences.

Carney will take office during a tense trade dispute with the United States, sparked by Donald Trump’s return to the White House. In his victory speech, Carney expressed confidence that Canada would prevail in the trade war, stating, “In trade, as in hockey, Canada will win.”

Mark Carney, born in 1965 in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories, has a distinguished career in economics and finance. He served as the Governor of the Bank of Canada from 2008 to 2013 and the Bank of England from 2013 to 2020. Carney is also known for his work on climate action as the UN Special Envoy for Climate Action and Finance. He is expected to focus on strengthening Canada’s economy and tackling trade challenges.

Carney is married to Diana Fox, a British economist, and they have four daughters. The family currently resides in Ottawa.
