JNS: In a historic move, the African Union officially became a permanent member of the G20 on September 9, 2023. The momentous occasion unfolded as the first session of the G20 Summit commenced in New Delhi, with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi extending a warm invitation to Azali Assoumani, Head of the African Union, to assume a permanent seat at the G20 table.
India played a pivotal role in advocating for the inclusion of the African Union as a permanent member within the G20, aligning with the principles of “Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas,” emphasizing inclusive development for all.
In his address during the inaugural session titled ‘One Earth,’ Prime Minister Modi underscored the significance of India’s G20 presidency, emphasizing the notion of ‘sabka saath,’ which extends not only within India but also across the international community. Modi expressed how this presidency has evolved into a people’s G20 in India, as millions of Indians feel connected to the event.
India’s clarion call to the world was a plea to unite and collectively transform the prevailing global trust deficit into one of mutual trust and interdependence. Prime Minister Modi stressed that the time has come for global cooperation and solidarity. He highlighted the urgency of addressing a myriad of challenges, including food and fuel management, counterterrorism efforts, cybersecurity, healthcare, energy sustainability, and water security. These challenges, he asserted, demand resolute solutions that will secure a better future for generations to come.
Modi emphasized that the 21st century is an era that must chart a new course for the world. He noted that traditional problems require innovative resolutions, urging the world to fulfill its responsibilities with a human-centric approach. He pointed out that, just as the world successfully combated COVID-19, it can also triumph over the trust deficit created by conflicts and discord.
The induction of the African Union as a permanent member of the G20 not only underscores India’s commitment to global inclusivity but also marks a significant step towards fostering cooperation, trust, and shared progress on the international stage.
