Dhaka: In a significant development for media transparency, the Bangladesh government is considering the establishment of a Media Commission aimed at reinforcing press freedom and accountability, according to Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus.
Yunus emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring a free and open media environment. “The freedom of the press and expression is already guaranteed. We have encouraged open criticism and respect for diverse opinions,” he stated.
The interim government head also outlined plans to reform and enhance existing oversight bodies to ensure they are more effective in serving public interests. “We are working to strengthen these commissions so they can better hold the government and other entities accountable,” Yunus added.
Additionally, Yunus addressed the controversial Digital Security Act, promising the withdrawal of cases deemed false or harassing. “We have compiled a list of restrictive laws, including the Cyber Security Act. Measures will be taken to repeal or amend these ‘black laws’ as necessary,” he concluded.
