Ranchi: BIT Mesra, in association with the University of Glasgow and the ASSRG, Trichy, launched the International Workshop on Wetland Ecosystem Management today. Running from 13 to 15 January, the workshop is centered around the theme “Wetland Management: Maintaining or Restoring the Natural State of Wetlands” and aims to equip participants with practical skills in Q-GIS for effective wetland monitoring and management.
The event commenced with a keynote address by Dr. Indranil Manna, Vice Chancellor of BIT Mesra, who underscored the crucial role of wetland conservation amid escalating climate change challenges. He highlighted the need for innovative approaches to preserving these vital ecosystems.
Dr. Edward Curley and Dr. Bianca Cavazzin from the University of Glasgow, presented on global strategies for wetland conservation.
Other distinguished keynote speakers, including Dr. N. N. Salghuna and Mr. Jyotish Jayan from ASSRG, will share insights into spatial monitoring techniques. At the same time, Prof. M.L. Kansal of IIT Roorkee will delve into the topics of wetland restoration and water resource management in tomorrow’s sessions.
In addition to expert talks, the workshop features hands-on Q-GIS training sessions and interactive discussions focused on sustainable conservation practices. These practical sessions are aimed at enhancing participants’ abilities to tackle real-world wetland management challenges.
The opening day concluded with closing remarks by Dr. Bindhu Lal, Chairperson, and Dr. Kirti Avishek, Convenor, who emphasized the importance of translating the knowledge gained into actionable strategies for wetland conservation.
