BIT Mesra Leads Sustainable Agriculture Revolution with Smart Irrigation Project

Ranchi: Birla Institute of Technology (BIT), Mesra, has made a significant leap in sustainable agriculture with the successful completion of its innovative project, “Adaptive Irrigation Management System Using Sustainable Energy.” The project, funded by Central Coalfields Limited, was spearheaded by Dr. Debomita Ghosh, Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE).

The project’s goal is to transform traditional farming practices by introducing a smart farming ecosystem. It features automated, continuous monitoring of key crop parameters, aimed at increasing crop yields and improving farmers’ incomes.

Designed to overcome challenges faced by rural and power-deficient areas, the system integrates solar power technology, ensuring consistent operation while promoting sustainable energy practices. The use of advanced condition monitoring, control mechanisms, and field operations, powered by AI and Machine Learning (ML), helps optimize irrigation management and support high-yield crop patterns through embedded sensors.

Aligned with the Government of India’s vision for expanding smart farming and promoting groundwater conservation, the project also focuses on maximizing the use of renewable energy resources. Notably, all the equipment used in the project was indigenously manufactured, supporting the government’s “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” initiative.

Dr. Debomita Ghosh remarked, “This project aims to introduce automation, intelligence, and sustainability to the agricultural sector. By integrating AI and sustainable energy, we hope to provide farmers with advanced tools that will optimize irrigation, reduce costs, and boost productivity.”

The successful completion of this project highlights BIT Mesra’s dedication to pioneering research and innovation, contributing to technological advancements that support sustainable agriculture and national development.
