Bokaro: Following a deadly protest at Bokaro Steel Limited (BSL), Harimohan Jha, the Chief General Manager (CGM) of BSL, was arrested after being implicated in the tragic death of 26-year-old Prem Mahto.
Mahto, a displaced youth, sustained fatal injuries during a lathi charge by BSL security forces while participating in a demonstration calling for employment opportunities at the steel plant.
The incident, which occurred amid rising tensions in the region, has sparked widespread protests from displaced workers and apprentices, further escalating the situation. In response to Mahto’s death, protestors have called for a shutdown, leading to the closure of both Chas and Bokaro today.
The district administration of Bokaro confirmed Jha’s arrest in a press statement, with Deputy Commissioner Vijaya Jadhav assuring the public that swift action would be taken. The administration is closely monitoring the situation to prevent further unrest.
Previously, BSL management had agreed to address the demands of the displaced, though protestors insisted on continuing their demonstrations. In the aftermath of Mahto’s death, the steel plant has announced several measures to address the grievances of the affected families. A compensation of Rs. 20 lakh has been promised to Mahto’s family, and all injured individuals will receive free medical treatment at Bokaro General Hospital, in addition to a Rs. 10,000 compensation for each.
Furthermore, the district administration revealed that BSL has agreed to fulfill several key demands from the protestors. These include creating job posts within 21 days for those who have completed their training, offering employment to one family member of the deceased, and providing coaching facilities for further training. Additionally, BSL has pledged to provide free treatment to the injured and compensate those affected by the incident.
A high-level meeting held late last night included key officials such as Superintendent of Police Manoj Swargiari, the Executive Director of BSL, and the Deputy Inspector General of Police (CISF), among others. The district administration has committed to ensuring that these promises are met, with regular meetings set to oversee their implementation. The District Planning Officer and Additional Collector will be responsible for monitoring progress.
To maintain peace and public order, both the Deputy Commissioner and the Superintendent of Police have urged residents to remain calm. A three-member inquiry committee has been formed to investigate the fatal clash, led by Sub-Divisional Officer Pranjal Dhanda. The committee will examine CCTV footage and other evidence as part of a comprehensive investigation.
