JNS: ChatGPT was temporarily banned in Italy due to concerns that the artificial intelligence (AI) tool violated the country’s data collection policies.
The Italian Data Protection Authority called the action a “temporary step” “until ChatGPT respects privacy.”
The authority announced an “immediate temporary restriction on the processing of Italian users’ data” against ChatGPT’s owner, OpenAI of the United States.
The investigation comes after the chatbot suffered a data breach on March 20, putting some users’ personal information, such as chat history and payment information, at risk. The bug that caused the leak, according to OpenAI, has been fixed.
On Friday, OpenAI announced that it had disabled ChatGPT in Italy and that it adheres to the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
OpenAI, a US start-up backed by Microsoft, created ChatGPT.
Italy is the first country in the Western world to prohibit the advanced chatbot ChatGPT.
