Following the bill’s passage in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh confirmed in a statement on social media platform X that the party would soon approach the apex court.
“The INC will very soon be challenging in the Supreme Court the constitutionality of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024,” Ramesh stated.

He further asserted that the Congress would continue its resistance against what it perceives as attacks by the Modi government on the fundamental principles of the Indian Constitution.
The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, which was passed in the Rajya Sabha late Thursday night, includes provisions aimed at enhancing transparency and accountability in the management of Waqf Boards. The bill had already been approved by the Lok Sabha earlier that week, around 2 AM on Wednesday.
Ramesh emphasized that Congress would not back down in opposing the government’s actions that, in its view, undermine the Constitution’s principles, provisions, and practices.
The challenge to the Waqf (Amendment) Bill now moves to the legal arena, as Congress prepares for its next steps in seeking judicial review of the legislation.
