Floods in Assam disrupt lives; affect around 4.89 Lakh people in 19 Districts

JNS: The devastating floods in Assam have continued to wreak havoc, affecting almost 4.89 lakh individuals across 19 districts, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).

The latest report from ASDMA reveals that the most affected districts include Bajali, with 2.67 lakh people impacted, followed by Nalbari with 80,061 affected individuals, Barpeta with 73,233 affected, Lakhimpur with 22,577 affected, Darrang, with 14,583 affected, Tamulpur with 14,180 affected, Baksa with 7,282 affected, and Goalpara with 4,750 affected.

The floods have resulted in the inundation of approximately 10,782.80 hectares of agricultural land, severely affecting crops and adding to the plight of farmers.

The deluge has affected 1,538 villages across 54 revenue circles in districts including Bajali, Baksa, Barpeta, Biswanath, Bongaigaon, Chirang, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Goalpara, Golaghat, Kamrup, Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur, Nagaon, Nalbari, Tamulpur, and Udalguri.

Heavy rainfall has caused several rivers to rise above the danger level. The Brahmaputra River poses a threat in Neamatighat (Jorhat district), while other rivers such as the Manas River at NH Road Crossing, Pagladiya River at NT Road Crossing, and Puthimari River at NH Road Crossing have also exceeded their danger levels.

To provide relief to those affected, the district administration has set up 140 relief camps and 75 relief distribution centers in 14 flood-hit areas, accommodating approximately 35,142 individuals.

However, many others have sought refuge on roads, mountains, and embankments, as the floods continue to displace families from their homes.

The ASDMA flood report highlights that the calamity has also taken a toll on domestic animals, with 4,27,474 animals being affected by the floods.

Rescue operations are underway by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Fire & Emergency, and Civil Defence personnel in the flood-affected districts.

In the past 24 hours, the floodwaters have breached one embankment and destroyed 14 others, along with damaging 213 roads, 14 bridges, multiple agri-bunds, school buildings, irrigation canals, and culverts, further worsening the infrastructure situation.

The Assam government and various agencies are working tirelessly to provide assistance, relief, and rescue operations to mitigate the effects of the devastating floods.
