New Delhi: Former British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, accompanied by his wife Akshata Murty and their daughters Krishna and Anoushka, visited the Indian Parliament House on Tuesday.
They were welcomed by Sudha Murthy, Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament and Sunak’s mother-in-law, as per a statement from the Indian government.
The family’s visit to the Parliament included a tour of the iconic Parliament House Complex, where they admired its historical architecture and grandeur. They explored several significant locations within the complex, including the Galleries, Chambers, Constitution Hall, and Samvidhan Sadan.
Utpal Kumar Singh, Secretary General of the Lok Sabha, and P.C. Mody, Secretary General of the Rajya Sabha, were present to welcome Sunak and his family.
“This visit is part of Sunak’s recent engagements in India,” the government’s statement noted.
Earlier in his trip, Sunak and his family visited the Taj Mahal in Agra.
The former UK Prime Minister also attended the T20 cricket match between India and England at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. He shared his experience on social media, reflecting on the tough match for England while congratulating Team India on their victory. Sunak also expressed his pleasure at meeting England players Jos Buttler and Suryakumar Yadav before the game.
Sunak, who made history as the first person of Indian origin to serve as UK Prime Minister, also had a productive meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Modi described Sunak as a “great friend” of India and emphasized his commitment to stronger India-UK ties.
In a post on X, Modi expressed his delight in meeting Sunak and his family, stating, “We had a wonderful conversation on many subjects… Mr. Sunak is a great friend of India and is passionate about even stronger India-UK ties.” Modi also shared photos from the meeting, featuring Sunak and his family alongside his mother-in-law Sudha Murthy.
In addition to meeting PM Modi, Sunak also engaged in discussions with Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. The Ministry of Finance confirmed the meeting on X, stating that the two leaders explored opportunities to enhance market-based financial relations and drive economic growth.
Sunak’s visit highlights ongoing efforts to foster deeper economic and diplomatic ties between the United Kingdom and India.
