New Delhi: The Indian government has officially released the operational guidelines for the Namo Drone Didi Scheme, a new initiative aimed at empowering women through technology in agriculture. Approved by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, this central sector scheme is set to provide drones to Women Self Help Groups (SHGs) under the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihoods Mission, with an ambitious budget of Rs 1,261 crore.
The scheme is designed to subsidize the purchase of drones for women in SHGs, enabling them to enhance their farming practices by efficiently applying fertilizers and pesticides. By utilizing drone technology, members of these groups can significantly reduce the time and labor involved in agricultural tasks.
Targeting 14,500 selected SHGs over the next two years, the Namo Drone Didi Scheme emphasizes not only drone distribution but also specialized training in drone operations. Participants will gain essential skills in crop monitoring, soil analysis, and precision farming, allowing them to apply agricultural inputs more accurately and sustainably.
Drones will facilitate precise application of fertilizers and pesticides, utilizing advanced GPS and sensor technologies to ensure even coverage and minimize waste. This approach not only reduces environmental impact but also lowers operational costs for farmers.
The Empowered Committee of Secretaries from the Departments of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Rural Development, and Fertilizers will oversee the implementation of the scheme. Women SHGs will receive up to 80% of the drone and accessory costs, capped at Rs 8 lakh, with the remaining amount financed as a loan through the National Agriculture Infrastructure Financing Facility.
Training for selected members will span 15 days, focusing on drone piloting and agricultural applications. Lead Fertilizer Companies will play a key role in coordinating with state departments, drone manufacturers, and SHGs to ensure smooth procurement and implementation processes.
The Ministry has urged all stakeholders to effectively utilize these operational guidelines to ensure the prompt rollout of the Namo Drone Didi Scheme, marking a significant step toward empowering women in the agricultural sector through innovative technology.
