Govt Unveils Face-Scan Aadhaar App to Curb Fraud, End Need for Physical Cards

New Delhi: In response to growing incidents of Aadhaar misuse, the Indian government has unveiled a new Aadhaar authentication app, currently in its beta phase.

Designed to eliminate the need for carrying a physical Aadhaar card, the app uses QR code scanning and facial recognition to verify identity—mirroring the simplicity and convenience of UPI transactions.

Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw introduced the app via a video shared on social media platform X, highlighting its user-friendly interface and privacy-first approach. “Only essential information will be shared for verification, ensuring user data remains secure,” he stated.

The process involves scanning a QR code followed by a live selfie, which the app matches with UIDAI records. This digital-first approach aims to eliminate fake documents and reduce the risk of cyber fraud.

Vaishnaw also emphasized aligning the Aadhaar framework with the recently enacted Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023, ensuring that user rights and data privacy remain central.

He called the initiative a step toward a modern, secure Aadhaar ecosystem designed to improve lives—especially for India’s poor and middle-class citizens.

The new app offers a range of user-friendly features with a strong focus on security.

  • Face ID Authentication: Real-time facial recognition eliminates the need for OTPs or physical IDs.
  • QR Code Scanning: Allows for secure identity confirmation by simply scanning a digital QR code.
  • Data Minimization: Users can choose what data to share, ensuring privacy and control.
