Kolkata: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur has achieved a significant milestone by securing the 2nd position in India in the latest QS World University Rankings for Sustainability 2025. The institute made an impressive leap of 147 places compared to its 2024 performance, now ranking 202nd globally, 23rd in Asia, and 2nd among all IITs in India.
The QS World University Rankings for Sustainability 2025 featured a total of 1,751 institutions worldwide. IIT Kharagpur’s performance was particularly strong in key areas such as environmental research, sustainability initiatives, knowledge exchange, employability, governance, and opportunities.
Expressing his thoughts on the achievement, Prof. V.K. Tewari, Director of IIT Kharagpur, stated, “We are delighted to be ranked 2nd in India in the QS World University Rankings for Sustainability 2025. This recognition reaffirms IIT Kharagpur’s commitment to advancing sustainability through cutting-edge research in artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, 5G networks, healthcare, precision agriculture, and smart infrastructure. Our contributions to India’s vision of becoming a knowledge economy and a sustainable nation are reflected in this achievement.”
He further emphasized that the institute remains dedicated to integrating sustainable practices across all aspects of academia, research, and campus operations. “Our goal is to lead by example in creating a sustainable and resilient future, while equipping our graduates with the skills to make a positive impact in a rapidly changing world,” Prof. Tewari added.
