New Delhi: India has emerged as the second-largest mobile manufacturer globally, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on Tuesday. The country’s mobile manufacturing sector has grown significantly, from just 2 units in 2014 to over 300 units today.

Currently, 99.2% of mobile phones sold in India are locally produced, with a total manufacturing value of Rs 4.22 lakh crore. Exports reached Rs 1.29 lakh crore in 2024, a stark rise from 2014, when only 26% of phones sold were made domestically.

Vaishnaw noted that India manufactures about 325 to 330 million mobile phones annually, with nearly a billion phones in use across the country. He credited the ‘Make In India’ initiative for this growth, which has also generated approximately 12 lakh jobs over the past decade.

Looking ahead, Vaishnaw emphasized expanding production into higher-value components like semiconductors, which is a key part of India’s push for greater self-reliance in electronics manufacturing. The ongoing India Semiconductor Mission, with projects from Micron and Tata Electronics, aims to establish a robust semiconductor industry.

Vaishnaw concluded, “From mobile phones to defense equipment, production is returning to India, cementing its position as a global manufacturing hub.”
