New Delhi: In a significant boost to its maritime capabilities, India today signed a landmark defence agreement with France for the procurement of 26 Rafale Marine fighter jets. The deal was inked in New Delhi in the presence of senior officials from India’s Defence Ministry and representatives of the French government.
Under the agreement, India will acquire 22 single-seater and four twin-seater Rafale Marine jets, specifically customized to meet the operational requirements of the Indian Navy. These cutting-edge fighter aircraft will be deployed on India’s aircraft carriers, including INS Vikramaditya and the newly commissioned INS Vikrant, strengthening the country’s maritime strike power.
Equipped with advanced weaponry and state-of-the-art missile systems, the Rafale Marine jets are expected to significantly bolster the Indian Navy’s operational reach and readiness. Known globally for their efficiency and performance, these aircraft are currently operated by the French Navy.
According to defence officials, deliveries are set to begin approximately three and a half years after the signing of the contract, with all aircraft expected to be handed over within six and a half years.
The induction of the Rafale Marine jets marks a major step in India’s efforts to enhance its maritime security infrastructure and project greater power across the Indian Ocean region.
