India Stands as Second-Largest Steel Producer

New Delhi: India is now the second-largest producer of steel in the world, boasting a production capacity of 144 million metric tones, said Bhupathiraju Srinivasa, Minister of State for Steel and Heavy Industries. He was addressing a three-day international conference on green steel production.

Srinivasa praised the significant technological innovations and improvements in material efficiency that have propelled global steel production to nearly 2 billion metric tonnes. He emphasized the critical role of these advancements in meeting the rising demand for steel while maintaining environmental sustainability.

Looking ahead, the minister outlined a vision for the steel sector that focuses on digitization and sustainable production methods. He underscored the importance of minimizing emissions and reducing the industry’s carbon footprint. “The future of the steel sector lies in our ability to transition towards low-carbon metal production,” he stated, calling for process innovations and robust collaboration among both primary and secondary metal producers.

Srinivasa’s remarks reflect the government’s commitment to promoting sustainable practices in the steel industry, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change while ensuring continued growth in one of India’s key sectors.
