Indian Railways to Launch Hydrogen-Powered Trains in Push for Sustainable Transportation

by Ashis Sinha

Indian Railways is on the verge of adopting another cutting-edge technology following its transition from diesel to electric engines. The Ministry of Railways is preparing to introduce hydrogen-powered trains, marking a significant milestone in India’s push for environmentally friendly transportation. The country’s first hydrogen-powered train is currently under construction at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, with the project nearing completion.

Sources indicate that the hydrogen train is expected to be ready by the end of this month. This development is being hailed as a major leap towards achieving zero carbon emissions, a key goal in India’s sustainable transport agenda. In the financial year 2023-24, the Ministry has allocated Rs 2800 crore for the development of 35 hydrogen fuel cell trains, which will not only reduce pollution but also offer enhanced convenience for passengers.

In January, ICF General Manager U Subbarao announced that the construction of the hydrogen fuel cell train is progressing rapidly and could be completed by March 25. While hydrogen trains globally typically have engines ranging from 500 to 600 horsepower, India is pushing the envelope with a 1,200 horsepower engine, setting a new record for the most powerful hydrogen train engine in the world.

According to the sources, the first hydrogen train is proposed to be assigned to the Delhi division of Northern Railway and is set to operate on the 89 km Jind-Sonipat route.

This innovation brings multiple benefits: it will be environmentally friendly, producing zero carbon emissions, and it will contribute to reduced pollution levels. Additionally, hydrogen, being a clean and recyclable energy source, makes the train more cost-effective over time compared to diesel and electric trains.

Notably, this step is also part of Indian Railways’ broader move towards more sustainable transportation systems. As the fourth-largest railway network in the world, the Indian Railways is undergoing rapid technological and infrastructural changes that will further enhance its eco-friendly credentials.
