ISRO Successfully Launches EOS-08 Earth Observation Satellite

‘No deviation, mission accomplished,’ says Somanath

Andhra Pradesh: Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) achieved a significant milestone this morning, with the successful launch of the EOS-08 Earth Observation Satellite. The satellite, weighing 175.5 kg, was carried into orbit by the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV-D3), which took off at 9:17 a.m. from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.

The 34-meter tall SSLV-D3, a 119-ton expendable rocket with a cost of approximately Rs 56 crore, demonstrated its reliability and precision during today’s mission. In addition to the EOS-08, the rocket also transported the SR-0, a small satellite developed by the Chennai-based start-up Space Rickshaw.

The SSLV-D3 is designed to carry payloads of up to 500 kg to Low Earth Orbit (LEO), highlighting ISRO’s strategic shift towards catering to the expanding market for smaller satellites. This successful launch is a pivotal step in the SSLV Development Project, which aims to bolster operational missions in collaboration with Indian industry and NewSpace India Ltd.

Union Minister of State for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences, Jitendra Singh, extended his congratulations to ISRO. In an X post, Singh praised the team, stating, “Kudos to team #ISRO for the successful launch of SSLV-D3/EOS-08 Mission. With the personal intervention & patronage provided by PM Sh @narendramodi, Team @isro has been able to carry one success after the other in a serial manner.”

ISRO Chairman S. Somanath also acknowledged the significance of the launch, noting that it marks a successful completion of the SSLV development phase.
