John J. Hopfield and Geoffrey E. Hinton Awarded 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics

JNS: The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm has announced that John J. Hopfield and Geoffrey E. Hinton are the recipients of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics.

This year’s laureates have utilized concepts from physics to create foundational methods for modern machine learning. According to the Nobel Prize press release, “John Hopfield developed an associative memory that can store and reconstruct images and various data patterns. Geoffrey Hinton invented a technique that autonomously identifies properties in data, enabling tasks such as recognizing specific elements in images.”

The Nobel Prize in Physics comes with a cash award of 11 million Swedish crowns, equivalent to approximately $1.1 million.

John J. Hopfield, born in 1933 in Chicago, Illinois, earned his PhD from Cornell University in 1958 and currently holds a professorship at Princeton University in New Jersey. Geoffrey E. Hinton, born in 1947 in London, UK, received his PhD from The University of Edinburgh in 1978 and serves as a professor at the University of Toronto in Canada.

Their groundbreaking work continues to have a significant impact on the fields of artificial intelligence and machine learning.
