Kanpur: The city of Kanpur, long plagued by the activities of cunning bookies, witnessed a major breakthrough as the Crime Branch’s spot and surveillance teams successfully dismantled two such gangs. Fifteen individuals have been arrested, with the police now intensifying their search for other members of these illegal operations.
The arrests took place in two separate locations: ten bookies were apprehended from a house in Naramau, Bithoor, while five others were caught from a room in Adarsh Nagar, Sen Paschim Para. These individuals were engaging in illegal betting through various mobile applications. A significant haul was recovered from the locations, including Rs 1,661,500, 13 Android phones, 11 keypad phones, a laptop, a calculator, five checkbooks, six passbooks, a platinum card, a passport, five notebooks, and six registry papers.
The police revealed that the bookies had been frequently changing their hideouts every two months to evade detection. One of the arrested gangs has connections to multiple countries, including Dubai.
DCP West Aarti Singh confirmed that the investigation had been ongoing for some time, with ACP Chakeri Sumit Ramteke, the surveillance team of the Central Zone, and Bithoor police station playing key roles in the operation. The breakthrough came after a raid on the house of Aman Tiwari alias Moon in Naramau, leading to the arrest of the ten individuals. They were found to be placing bets on a match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Hyderabad, using betting apps such as Ola Vat 99 and Diamond Exchange 99.
The arrested suspects have been identified as Mohd. Imran, Mohd. Rahim alias Ayaz, Aamir Khan, Irfan Khan alias Bablu, Tayyab Ahmed, Janab Ali, Mo. Irfan, Gaurav Dwivedi alias Gore, Irshad Ahmed, and Razi Khan, all residents of different areas across Kanpur.
With these fifteen bookies now behind bars, the police are continuing their efforts to locate the remaining absconding members of the network.
