Kolkata Court Sentences Sanjoy Roy to Life Imprisonment in RG Kar Rape-Murder Case

Kolkata: A Sessions Court in Kolkata’s Sealdah area has sentenced Sanjoy Roy, a convicted civil volunteer, to life imprisonment in the highly publicized RG Kar rape-murder case.

The court, which did not deem the case as “rarest of rare,” also directed the state to provide Rs. 17 lakh in compensation to the victim’s family.

Sanjoy Roy was found guilty of raping and murdering a 31-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August 2024.

The victim, who had completed her shift, was attacked in a seminar room where she had gone to rest.

The case, which sparked widespread protests across Kolkata and other Indian cities, was initially investigated by local police but later transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) following public outcry and allegations of mishandling by the state administration. Roy was swiftly arrested after the incident, though protesters suspected others may have been involved.

In addition to the rape-murder case, the investigation also revealed corruption charges against RG Kar’s former principal, Sandip Ghosh, who was arrested in connection with both the crime and the corruption scandal. Ghosh was granted bail in the rape murder case but remains in jail over the corruption charges.

The case prompted ongoing protests by junior doctors in Kolkata, including cease work actions, until they were able to meet with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for a resolution.

The protests included candlelight vigils, human chains, and other demonstrations demanding justice for the victim.
