Multi-Crore Bridge Collapse in Giridih, sends shockwaves as it plunges into river

Giridih: A bridge under construction spanning the Arga River in Deori block of Giridih district, Jharkhand, has collapsed, sending shockwaves through the local community. The incident occurred at Kariphari village along the Fatehpur-Bhelwaghati road, where the structure’s girder broke under unexpected circumstances.

Constructed at a cost of five and a half crores by the Road Construction Department and contracted to Om Namah Shivay construction company, the bridge’s collapse has sparked concerns about safety and construction standards. Despite the monsoon season not yet officially beginning, heavy rains triggered a surge in the river’s water level, leading to the catastrophic failure on Saturday evening.

Eyewitnesses described a loud noise as one of the bridge’s supporting pillars succumbed to the force of the river, causing the girder to plunge into the water below. Another pillar also suffered significant damage during the downpour around 8 pm local time.

Authorities, including local administration teams, promptly responded to the scene to assess the extent of the damage and provide necessary assistance. The collapse has prompted immediate investigations into the construction methods and safety protocols employed during the project.

Officials are currently conducting inquiries to determine the exact cause of the collapse, emphasizing the need for stringent measures in future construction endeavors to prevent such incidents from recurring.
