National Student Seminar on Metallurgical Engineering Kicks Off at CSIR-NML

Jamshedpur: The Indian Institute of Metals (IIM) Jamshedpur Chapter, in association with CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory (NML), Tata Steel Limited, National Institute of Technology (NIT) Jamshedpur, and the Academy of Scientific & Innovative Research (AcSIR), inaugurated “Behind The Teacher’s Desk” (BTTD-2024), a national-level student seminar on Materials and Metallurgical Engineering.

The event, spanning June 19-21, 2024, aims to provide a collaborative platform for aspiring metallurgists to engage with industry experts, R&D labs, and academic institutions.

The seminar was formally inaugurated by Chief Guest Dr. N.C. Murmu, Director of CSIR-CMERI, Durgapur, alongside Dr. Sandip Ghosh Chowdhury, Director of CSIR-NML, Jamshedpur, Prof. Ashok Kumar, Chairman of IIM Jamshedpur, Dr. Chiradeep Ghosh, Chairman of the BTTD program, and Dr. Ammasi A., convener of BTTD-2024. The inauguration included the release of the seminar souvenir.

The objective of BTTD-2024 is to update students’ knowledge bases and provide a forum to share academic achievements, innovative ideas, and new thoughts in the fields of metallurgy and materials technology.

Since its inception in 2011, BTTD has grown into a highly anticipated event among Indian students.

In his welcome address, Dr. Sandip Ghosh Chowdhury emphasized the importance of metals, materials, and minerals in national development and the significant role young students play in this sector.

Chief Guest Dr. N.C. Murmu praised the organization of this student-oriented seminar, highlighting its role in fostering interest in Metallurgy & Materials Science among young scholars.

Professor Ashok Kumar outlined the various activities of the IIM Jamshedpur Chapter, with a particular focus on popularizing metallurgy among Indian professionals. Dr. Chiradeep Ghosh provided an overview of the seminar, noting that approximately 100 students and speakers from 28 engineering colleges and institutes across India are participating, with around 57 technical papers set to be presented in three parallel sessions.

The event also includes a metallurgical quiz session and an industrial visit. Participants come from institutions such as IIT Kharagpur, IIT Jammu, IIT Indore, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, MGIT Hyderabad, VNIT Nagpur, NIT Durgapur, NIT Bhopal, MANIT Bhopal, BITS Pilani, NIAMT Hatia Ranchi, IIEST Shibpur, NIT Jamshedpur, NIT Andhra Pradesh, NIT Raipur, Jadavpur University Kolkata, Birsa Institute of Technology Sindri, JNTU-GV CEV Vizianagaram, Indus University, Vellore Institute of Technology Vellore, CSIR-NML Jamshedpur, and AcSIR-NML Jamshedpur.

Dr. Ammasi A., convenor of BTTD-2024, proposed the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to the chief guest, students, and organizing committee members for their enthusiastic participation and efforts in making the seminar a success.

The event features two keynote lectures at the NML Auditorium by distinguished speakers, including Dr. Atanu Pal, Chief Technology Officer at Tata Steel Limited; Dr. Indranil Chattoraj, Adjunct Professor at IIT Jodhpur and former Director of CSIR-NML; Dr. P.K. Banerjee, Outstanding Scientist at CSIR-CIMFR Dhanbad; Dr. S.K. Satpati, Chairman and Managing Director of Uranium Corporation of India Ltd.; and Dr. S. Sivaprasad, Chief Scientist at CSIR-NML Jamshedpur.
