New Delhi: Nidhi Tewari, a 2014-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, has been appointed as Private Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, effective immediately. The appointment, confirmed by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on 29 March, was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.
Tewari, who was serving as Deputy Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), will hold her new role at Level 12 of the pay matrix, on a co-terminus basis.
A native of Mehmurganj in Varanasi, Prime Minister Modi’s constituency, Tewari cleared the 2013 Civil Services Examination with the 96th rank. Prior to joining the PMO, she served as Assistant Commissioner (Commercial Tax) in Varanasi and worked in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), handling Disarmament and International Security Affairs.
Tewari joined the PMO in 2022 as Under Secretary and was promoted to Deputy Secretary in 2023, where she contributed to the Foreign and Security section under National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.
Her appointment reflects her expertise in foreign policy and national security, positioning her as a key support to the Prime Minister’s office.
