PM Narendra Modi reaches Kazan to attend BRICS Summit

Kazan, Russia: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Kazan on Tuesday to participate in the BRICS Summit, which he described as “important.” In a post on X, he stated, “Landed in Kazan for the BRICS Summit. This is an important Summit, and the discussions here will contribute to a better planet.”

Upon landing at Kazan International Airport, PM Modi received a ceremonial welcome, with soldiers lining the tarmac as he disembarked. He was greeted warmly by Russian officials and women in traditional costumes. The Indian Ambassador to Russia, Vinay Kumar, was also present, according to a video shared by Sputnik.

Modi will be in Russia on October 22 and 23, marking his 11th attendance at a BRICS Summit. His last participation was in South Africa in 2023.

Before departing for Russia, Modi expressed on X, “Leaving for Kazan, Russia, to take part in the BRICS Summit. India attaches immense importance to BRICS, and I look forward to extensive discussions on a wide range of subjects. I also look forward to meeting various leaders there.”

During the summit, Modi is expected to meet with several world leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping. This meeting comes after an agreement between India and China regarding patrolling and resolving the military standoff along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misry stated that diplomatic and military negotiators from both countries have engaged in close contact, leading to an agreement on patrolling arrangements along the border, facilitating disengagement and addressing issues that arose in 2020.

The BRICS Summit includes leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, as well as invited members Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the UAE, effective January 1, 2024. Argentina was also invited but declined to participate under its new president, Javier Milei, who took office in December 2023.
