JNS: Mian Mohammad Shehbaz Sharif was sworn-in as the new Prime Minister of Pakistan on Monday, bringing to an end the political uncertainty that had gripped the country since a no confidence motion was introduced against his predecessor Imran Khan on March 8.
Shehbaz, the president of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), was elected unopposed as the 23rd Prime Minister of Pakistan by the National Assembly. He secured 174 votes against the majority mark of 172 in the 342-member Pakistan assembly.
Shehbaz (70) is the younger brother of three-time Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
Ousted premier Khan and most of his party’s lawmakers resigned their seats in the assembly immediately before voting started.
Notably, since from the independence of Pakistan in 1947, no elected prime minister has served a full term. Almost half of the country’s roughly 75-year existence has been ruled by the military.
Though, Imran Khan is the first Prime Minister to be removed by a no-confidence vote.
