JNS: Congress stalwart Sonia Gandhi officially entered the fray for the Rajya Sabha elections from Rajasthan, a seat left vacant following the retirement of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
Sonia, currently representing Uttar Pradesh’s Rae Bareli in the Lok Sabha, submitted her nomination papers to the Returning Officer at the Rajasthan Assembly, marking her bid for a seat in the Upper House.
Congress figures, including Rahul Gandhi, former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, State Congress President Govind Singh Dotasara, and Leader of Opposition Tikaram Julie, accompanied her during the nomination process.
The elections are being contested for three Rajya Sabha seats from Rajasthan. Given the prevailing numerical dynamics, the victory of two BJP candidates and one from the Congress is widely anticipated.
It’s noteworthy that Sonia Gandhi, who held the reins of the Congress party continuously from 1998 to 2017, has been elected as an MP from Rae Bareli five times. She assumed the role of Congress interim president in 2019 following Rahul Gandhi’s resignation post the party’s disappointing performance in the parliamentary elections that same year.
In response to the unfolding electoral dynamics, the BJP has nominated Madan Rathore and Chunnilal Garasia as their candidates from Rajasthan, with their nominations scheduled for tomorrow.
