Pahalgam: A tragic terror attack in the Baisaran area of Pahalgam on Tuesday claimed of the life of atleast 27 tourist and left several injured. The attackers reportedly opened fire on tourists during a horse ride, allegedly after asking about their religious identities. Four of the injured are said to be in critical condition.
The Baisaran meadow, accessible only by foot or horseback, is a popular destination that draws thousands of visitors annually. The incident comes at a time when Jammu and Kashmir is witnessing a surge in tourism, with preparations underway for the Amarnath Yatra starting July 3.
Security forces and emergency teams swiftly responded to the scene. Unconfirmed media reports suggest the number of injured may be as high as 12.
Political leaders strongly condemned the attack. Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, expressing deep shock, called the attackers “inhuman” and cut short his engagements to return to Srinagar. PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti also denounced the incident, calling it “cowardly” and urging a thorough investigation into potential security lapses.

The attack occurred amid high-profile visits, including that of US Vice President JD Vance to India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ongoing visit to Saudi Arabia.
